Portuguese citizenship: how to get it?

  • Citizenship by birth

    Children born in Portugal can obtain citizenship provided that one of the parents has been legally resident in the country for at least 2 years.

  • Citizenship by naturalization

    Citizenship can be obtained after 5 years of legal residence in Portugal. This period can be reduced for those who were born in the country or have Portuguese roots.
